Gomeda: Hessonite, brown zircon, or ??

Back in 1974 my gem guru was late Raj Roop Tank in Jaipur. I was first

taught that " Gomeda " was Brown Zircon. Even now a number of

authorities say Gomeda is ZIRCON. Other authorities say Gomeda is

Garnet. In fact, in Thai language the word for any garnet is Gomed.

It is my opinion, after considering and practicing full-time for 35

years (as of this year), that Gomeda refers to any brown to orange

garnet, primarily Hessonite garnet, but also any type (there are 4

types of garnet), such as Spessartite. In Vedic times they had no way

to distinguish between Hessonite or Spessartite which look and feel

the same.

A mixture of " honey, blood & moonlight " - or orange, is the ideal

color given for Gomeda. And orange (brown) zircon is uparatna for

Gomeda. Zircon has been used for 1000s of years and they have a very

high hardness of 7.5. In fact, they are stronger that most gems, what

to speak of natural pearls and corals which are so soft, yet still we

must wear them.
