Doubt : Is it true that Rishis had access to the nectar of Soma to obain divine revelations. What then is Soma ?

First let us understand that stories are indicative of certain principles

Let us see what is Soma. When we know what is Soma, then a further clarification for the first doubt would be automatically become void. The Soma is located in the Sky. SOMASYE MOUJAVASTASYA. Rig.Ved. 10/35/1.

Some is the symbal of highly cool state from which the force to live is derived by the entire plants, flora, trees (the VanaspaTi). That force, that rays, is Soma. You know that the plants respire in the night. In the night only the moon is appeared. The plants get the force to respire from the moon or moon rays. The moonlight, moon rays are highly cool, polite, sober.

It is mentioned that for 15 days (fortnight) the Soma gets increased step by step and for another fortnight the Soma get reduced step by step. That is, the leaves of Soma grows slowly and reach fully grown. In the other 15 days the leaves of Soma are slowly slowly decrease the growth.

This means in the 15 days when the moon is growing slowly and reach a full (round) moon, the moonlight is spread all over in full shine and in that fortnight the vanaspaTi is in the happiest state of theirs, they respire to the topmost, they are able to produce the medicinal values in their root, in their stem, in their leaves, in their flowers, in their fruit etc.

You are aware that in the sunlight the plants do the photosynthesis and prepare their food. Like that in the moonlight, with the force they receive from the moonlight, with the help of the moon rays, the stored food is converted into the required factors.

(You know, when we eat, what ever we eat, all the items are stored in our body as fact/glucose. Whenever a particular factor such as carbohydrate, vitamin etc is required by any of our organs, from the stored fact, the body takes a little, converts it to the required mineral or vitamin and reach it to the needy organ. This is the principle of body. This is taught in the science also. Even then, the science is insisting us to eat all kinds of food, pulses, cereals, fish, egg, mutton, so on. It is not necessary for a human being to take 10g this, 10g that, 5g, the other, 5g the another. Any one thing as food is enough

for human body.) [This para is not the subject which I should mention here, but it is relevant to understand)

Then comes, the soma is located in the sky. It is clear this description is of moon only. The Sushruta Samhita states that there are several types of Soma . All these are having high medicinal values. (somamadAyAddhwara kalpanE hrutamabhi sutamabhi hutaja) After bringing the Soma, put it in the HOMA KUNDA. Like this we can see a number of places where the Soma is described and on a very minute study it is will reveal that it is that force which all the plants get from moon.

In the sloka of Siva, see what is Soma -

‘viSuddha jnAna rUpAya

trivEdee divya chakshushE

shrEya prApti nimittAya

namah : somArdha dhArinE’

soma + ardha = somArdha ( half soma). The half moon in the (fore)head. Soma means moon.

Like that we can see at a number of places the word Soma is coming. This soma is not accessible to sinful persons, to persons who do not have a pure mind. Means persons like Rishis have the access to it (with pure mind). Only people with pure mind can locate, visualize, distinguish such plants which are having high medicinal properties and coolest in nature.

You may remember that In mahAbhArat, the Bhishma goes to kAshi king and forcefully brings the three brides, Amba, Ambika and Ambalika and gives to vichitraveerya. Vichitraveerya is bedridden due to the disease TB. These three names are the names of three plants in vEdAs having highest medicinal values.

These plants who are able to distinguish, could be the real and purest medicine for treatment in TB.

The mruthyunjaya mantra thriambakam yajAmyahe suganddhim pushtivarddhanam…etc triambakam = means three ambAs. It is Amba, Ambika and AmbAlika. Put them into the homaKunda and do the yajnA, (it will give you suganddhi and pushti vardhak).

Trust you must have got a small idea about Soma, the nectar availability to Rish etc

Best of luck

Vijayan

Mr Omanakuttan

What Honourable Dev Maharaj mentioned and what is indicated in my posting is the correct definition for Soma.

But while performing Homa - Soma yaga - soma is being put into the Homa Kunda. This is correct. But whether this is the real soma which has been described in the vEdAs. It is clearly mentioned at so many places that it is not visible or recognisable by ordinary people. Only Rishis will be able to recognise it and it is situated at sky or space.

Then what is the plant used as Soma. There is a plant used in Homa named Soma. So what we have to infer is, that plant, which is being used in the Homa, may be, its name is Soma but whether it is the real one. It could not be the real Soma which are described in vEdA. Because if so,
