Guest guest
Dear Friends,What do we understand by the term Maya? Let us try to understand the term" Maya". The Sanskrit word" Maya "literally means "Not this". Maya is responsible for the illusion that the phenomenal world is a reality. In Advaita Vedanta MAYA is a VEILING OF THE TRUE, UNITARY SELF, THE COSMIC SPIRIT, also known as BRAHMAN. Advaita Philosophy holds Brahman is the only Reality. Hence Maya can not be true. At the same time Maya can not be untrue since it causes the material world to be seen. Hence Maya is considered as indescribable. Maya has two functions--one is to cover up Brahman and hide it from our mind. The other is to present the material world instead of Brahman. Let us consider an illusion of a rope being mistaken for a snake in darkness. Once the true knowledge of the rope is perceived, the illusion of the rope gets destroyed. Similarly Maya gets destroyed for a person when he perceives Brahman which only is the Reality. When Maya is regarded as true, it becomes the magical power of the Supreme Lord to create and rule the world. Maya is like God`s servant. God is not affected by the impiety of Maya, just as a magician is not cheated by his own magical powers. While God is bliss, individuals are under the spell of Maya. Hence their miseries and sufferings. Ahamkar(ego-consciouness) and Karma are said to be the binding forces of Maya. The phenomenal Cosmos is regarded as real on account of superimposition of the unreal on Brahman by Maya.
