Let us see as to what the major Upanishads say about OM. Taittriya Upanishad OM is Brahman. All this (universe) is OM. He who utters OM with the determination,"I shall obtain Brahman" does verily attain Brahman. OM empowers our will. We will achieve whatever we desire or intend, if that is in harmony with divine order. The greatest apiritual desire is to attain total oneness with God. Japa and Meditation on OM with the above-mentioned desire in mind will facilitate achievement of that desire. If we constantly keep

chanting OM throughout out day-to-day activities, OM guarantees their success and fruition, whatever they might be. Because OM encompasses the entire range of beings, from the material

to the spiritual. Those who are proficient in Upasana of OM will become proficient in everything. Prasna Upanishad The sound OM is verily the higher aand lower Brahman. Therefore, with this supportalone, does the wise man reach the one or the other.....If he meditates on the Supreme being (Paramapurusha) with the syllable OM, he becomes one with the Light, the Sun. He is led to the world of Brahman. He sees the Person that dwells in the body,Who is higher than the highest life.... That the wise one attains, even by the mere sound OM as support, That which is tranquil, nonageing, immortal, fearless and supreme."The first of the three states viz., Jagrat or waking state of

consciouness is represented by the sound A which is to be pronounced as in "Accountancy" . The dream state of consciouness lies in between waking and sleeping and is represented by the sound U which is as u only as in" would". The last state of consciouness is the deep sleep state and is represented by the sound M pronounced as in "sum". This closes the pronounciation of OM just as deep sleep stage is the final stage of the mind at rest. Whenever OM is recited in succession, there is an inevitable period of silence between two successive OMs. This represents the" fourth state " known as Turiya which is the state of perfect Bliss when the individual self recognises it`s identity with the supreme self. Although OM is to be found in each

Principal Upanishad and Bhagawad Geetha, eight of the Upanishads have sections dealing with Om itself. It will be useful to know what the Sruti( all the Upanishads appearing in the four vedas) tell us about OM. G.Balasubramanian Everyone is raving about the all-new Mail Beta.
