As I was meditating these thoughts came to me. Because, for many many years I have some chronic tension/energy blocks that won't go away, and because I cannot afford the extended two years body/energy therapy( like Rolfing, etc ) that was recommended, I have been experimenting with Amma's suggestion that we learn to relax every cell in our body via imagination. I'm a little too old for all the traditional yoga stretches, etc; and it's a long story that I don't want to get into. But definitely, for younger people hatha yoga is worthwhile. But, it seems Amma's suggestion to relax at the cellular level goes beyond the physical approach to a mental imagination visualization feeling approach. And, I recall another story which I heard many years ago, where a salesman selling Comfortable " Easy " Chairs started to experiment with deeper and deeper relaxation and eventually started to have amazing spiritual experiences. Talking to one body/energy worker recently; he said many athletes, when they get older begin to experience all sorts of stiffness, tensions and pain from their exertions and injuries when younger. He said these need to be attended to immediately with relaxation, rest, deep tissue massages, stretching, and other appropriate body/enery therapy work. Otherwise, they get imbedded in the cellular memory and much harder to dislodge. So just wanted to share these 2cent thoughts with you. It seems that perhaps there is no limit to what can be uncovered in deeper and deeper relaxation as we let go of all tensions( including all preconceived concepts )at the cellular level and surrender to the Inner Amma within. " ~ above from: http://www.amritapuri.org/amma/2006/609question.php But, the link does not seem to work anymore. Sorry. What Amma actually meant I don't know. I can only experiment and it may be different for each of us. Your question may be a good one to ask Amma by someone at Amritapuri. Or, perhaps other members can speak from their experiences. My current experiences seem to be more with relaxation rather than imagination. Amma also mentions the word RELAXATION many times in different contexts without using the word IMAGINATION. So, perhaps, RELAXATION is the important thing regardless of how (imagination or whatever). Do a search for the word `relax' @ amritapuri.org and you will find several articles there. Also do a search for `relax' in this forum and you will find 272 posts. Also can do search for `relax cell' or `relax imagin' for fewer posts. IMAGINATION is used in various meditative approaches, usually as a starting point. But, ultimately, deeper and deeper relaxation should take one to deeper and deeper stillness and silence beyond all imaginings. As long as thought is predominant, imagination can be useful. When awareness of stillness is noticeable, go with that, relaxing into that stillness deeper and deeper. " Letting go " is another name for relaxation. " You should smile more. Every day, every morning, look at the mirror and give a good smile to yourself. You know what happens when you smile? All the muscles in your face get relaxed. The nerves in your brain get relaxation, and you get the confidence, courage and energy to move on in life. " ~ from some web Here is an excellent article by Amma on how relaxation is important in meditation. http://www.amritapuri.org/teachings/sadhana/med.php Amma Bless, amaranth Om Santi, Let All Beings Everywhere Be Peaceful and Happy !
