Good morning to you my beloved brother. Here is the information for the young American Horse family. Of course you know that there are six of the living in a very substandard trailer. They are respectively...Martha 24 who is the family " matriarch " , Angie 18, Jacob16 , Armand 15, Miya 4 and a half, Caden 2, and one on the way. These young people have been living in this trailer without running water, lights, or gas. In other words, after dark, they stay in the dark. Unlike other young people, they have no TV, computer or electronic games to pass the night away. They cannot cook a hot and nourishing meal because they have no propane to cook with. They cannot get up on a cold morning to a hot shower because there is no running water. It seems there is something wrong with the undertrailer piping so that the hose cannot get hooked up and that translates to no running water. In spite of these extreme hardships, these are the most beautifully Spirited young people one can ever hope to meet. This disposition was given to them by their beautiful late mother whom they lost two and a half years ago. They always have a smile ready to greet people and they never complain or talk about what they are living through. Please, if you would like to help, I urge you to contact Lakota Plains Propane to get them some gas. It would cost about $450 to fill their tank and would last a few months. $120 would get them 1/4 tank which I was informed would last about two weeks. The phone number for the propane company is (605) 867-5199 or (605) 455-1188. Their address at the propane company is P.O. Box 1944, Pine Ridge, South Dakota 57770. When I spoke with LaCreek Electric, they shared with me that the kids have been living without electricity to the trailer for so long that they would need to reapply for electricty and it would cost $455.16 to get their electricity put back on. This cost reflects old bills that they were unable to pay. The phone number for the electric company is (605) 685-6581 and their address is P.O. Box 220, Martin, South Dakota 57551. As soon as the tubing under the trailer is fixed, they will be able to get running water into their trailer. I am working on finding someone to up there and fix it for them. Once it is fixed, the hose from their well can be hooked up to the trailer so they will have running water. Two things: I gave the address for the utility companies for anyone who would like to send a donation to these companies. Please send a check and make sure that it is designated to the account of " Martha American Horse " . Second, I included the phone numbers so for those who can...you may use your credit card to call and donate something toward paying the account of " Martha American Horse " . Next, there is a small (and expensive) grocery store/gas station about 1/4 mile down the road from this young family called " Common Cents " . The store is at Sharp's Corner. You could go online and get their phone number. Why? Because for those who are so inclined, you could call them with a credit card to help this young family get gas in their car (which has no windows due to vandals; imagine riding around in that during the winter months), or to buy groceries. Or another suggestion-they could get gas at Common Cents, and then drive to Chadron, Nebraska or Rapid City, So. Dakota to shop for food and/or warm clothes at Super Wal-Mart. You can also use your credit card at either one of these stores. Just call your local Wal-Mart and tell them that you would like to authorize x amount of dollars for the American Horse family at either Rapid City or Chadron and they will tell you what you need to do. These young people are wonderful and they have strong Spirits, but they need help right now. Martha won't let the younger ones give up on school as she knows the importance of education and so she and Angie have, for now, been trying to shoulder the responsibility for everyone. Angie was one of the young people who went to the Cal-Earth workshop with us in September, where she was offered hope for the future of her family, but not once did she mention their immediate needs. We can't start anything until the Spring...so please open your hearts and pocket books to get this young family through the winter. What I finally would like to ask is this....if you donate any monies toward utilities, gas, or food to any of the above companies, PLEASE just send me an e-mail so that I can track what has been taken care of and what still needs to be done. Also, please forward this to your listserves if you would, or anyone that you think would be interested in helping. Pilamaye (thank you) for all that you do. To all who read this...Be well, stay strong, and Wicosani to you and your loved ones. ( " Wicosani " means to " walk in balnce with the four aspects of self: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual). With much love and gratitude.
