Dear Amma Sisters and Brothers ~ I have been a bit troubled by all the back

and forth, sometimes negative, about whether or not Amma has ever

expressed anger. One has only to read any volume of " Awaken Children " to know

that,

when it is appropriate, Amma will use what seems to be anger. There are so

many tales of heartstriken devotees, but all with a realization that came

out of Amma's response. Sometimes she speaks angrily; sometimes her anger

is expressed by a withdrawing from the person.

Amma is not anger or any other emotion, meaning she is not reacting. She

responds, it seems to me, with the right words or action for the situation,

whether it be anger or soothing calm. Amma is the guru. Only she can know

the reason for expressing any emotion in any given situation.

I recall one Devi Bhava where we were all perambulating around the room and

then crossed in front of the dais. The people were moving slowly, so when

I came to Amma, I was right in front of her for a few seconds. She was

holding a handful of flower petals, and looked right at me. Her look was

neither stern nor loving; it was piercing in its focus. The she threw the whole

bunch of petals right in my face! I thought it was the greatest present I

had ever gotten and continued my perambulation in a somewhat dazed and joyous

mood.

I guess I'm saying that we don't know the reason for Amma's expressions of

emotion. We can only trust that whatever she does or says is right for the

particular person and moment.

Jai Mata Ma
