Students given scholarships at Amritapuri

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: As part of the 56th birthday celebrations of Mata Amritanandamayi held

at Amritapuri near here on Saturday, 2,000 scholarships were provided to

students from impoverished families. The scholarships are part of the

Vidyamritam scheme of the Mata Amritanandamayi Math (MAM) through which 32,000

students from all over the country are receiving the aid.

The function was inaugurated by Governor R.S. Gavai. Minister for Overseas

Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi and film actor Mohanlal were present. In his

address, Mr. Gavai said that he was glad to inaugurate a function where needy

children were helped.

Mr. Ravi said that Amritapuri had become a sacred land since the needy were

helped, both in material and spiritual ways.

Mr. Mohanlal recalled coming to the Math 32 years ago for Mata

Amritanandamayi’s blessings. MAM vice president Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri

welcomed the gathering.

Mata Amritanandamay’s birthday will be celebrated at the same venue on Sunday.
