Guest guest
Morals and Ethics are sometimes very confusing words particularly when one starts on the path of sadhna. One religion says...Meat eaters will go to hell another religion says....no prob for meat..only dont eat cow/pig/ One religion says....drinking alcohol is immoral another religion have alcohol in their religious ceremonies. One religion says...dont molest women another says... yes dont but only of your own religion...other religion's women are worth molesting One religion says.....smoking is not spiritual other religions dont accept it This confusion starts becoz different sects developed in different regions, among different mind-sets. God is Universal....and so should be his path i.e. sadhna. so there should be a universal set of morals and ethics which should be followed by a sadhaka. Though Patanjali's Yama & Niyamas are almost universal..still to deal with day to day situation, we must go deep into this question as to what is it which should be treated as a SIN in universal terms and what is virtue ( Positive for spiritual progress) universally. Let us ponder over this for a moment ?
Guest guest
Yes, Babaji, this is a very deep issue........people pick & choose different approaches from contradictory paths to suit their ego. These restrictions were placed by Masters, & only apply to people who choose to follow that path. So not eating meat, alcolhl etc are banned for thise who follow Patanjalis path. Patanjalis path is the easiest, so most people are advised to follow it. For people who are beginners on the ladder if spiritual progress, small things like eating meat, intoxication are lightly punished. But as one goes higher, the conditions get tougher. Thats why some religons allow you to eat meat, as their followers are pretty low on the spiritual ladder. Each path has its own rules. Most religons dont ban things like meat, intoxicants, but then they dont take you far. I think one should choose a path, & stick to its rules. Its very important to be honest with yourself when following the rules- so becoming a Vedic scholar to impress people with your knowledge, then becoming a " Tantric " to eat meat, then becoming a Muslim to have many wives - it wont do! Take Buddhism, very fashionable in the West. Or Ashtanga Yoga, also fashionable. Many people follow these paths. Yet they openly eat meat, while these 2 paths clearly ban it. Yoga bans meat 1st thing. Buddha spent his life preaching non-violence with deeds, not just words. With spiritual honesty, most of these " restrictions " fall away. Most religons made these rules because the people are dishonest with themself. Yet people find ways to twist these rules, making the rules pretty much useless.
