Good parenting values stressed at seminarBy Mary Nammour 7 September 2007 DUBAI — Good parenting instils value in young people and stresses respect and proper communication between parents and their children, Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and president of Zayed University has said. The Minister was addressing a seminar on "Parenting Values" on Zayed University's (ZU) Dubai campus on Wednesday. The seminar focussed on the challenges that parents face during the upbringing of their children in today's urban life. Also present were Dr Sulaiman Al Jassim, vice-president of ZU, and a number of international experts of education and

sociology. Speaking on the occasion, Shaikh Nahyan said: "The vision of the UAE is peace, truth and non-violence for our present and our future. Therefore, we seek a world characterised by the values of integrity, civility and compassion." G.B. Choithram, regional chairman for Middle East and Gulf Countries, SAI Group, and chairman of GEEBEE Group of Companies, said: "Good parenting is very essential while raising our children and consequently, for building

up the right character." Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jassim said, "The seminar seeks to draw out the basic human values of right conduct, peace, truth and love which are fundamental to the human personality." Rita and Robert Bruce, experts and guest speakers, made an elaborate presentation on the importance of communication between parents and children. "Instructions must be clear and delivered with love so that they can have positive results. Words are

crucial to the self-esteem of kids. We must not hurt or reject them." Later, Shaikh Nahyan signed a cooperation agreement between ZU and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). "The agreement underscores the importance of strengthening the universities' relations with the communities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi," Shaikh Nahyan noted.
