A CHILD'S DOG

" The function of the mind is to think, it cannot remain for a minute

without thinking. If you give it a Sense-object, it will think about

it. If you give it to a Guru, it will think about Guru. " ? Sri Sai

Satcharitra, Ch. X.

Dinku longed to have a dog. She spoke of it to her parents. They were

not in favour of having what they called " a messy dog " in the house.

Dinku did not give up. She was convinced that, some day, she would

have a dog of her own choice.

One day her father found a big dish lying in the house.

" What's this dish for? " he asked.

" Dinku said, " This is my dog's dish. "

" A dog's dish! " exclaimed the father. " How can you have one when you

do not have a dog? "

Dinku said, " But father, I already have one. I have him in my

imagination! "

On another occasion, the father found Dinku walking in the garden,

dragging a chain behind her.

" Dinku, what are you doing with the leash? " The father asked.

" Father, " replied Dinku, " this is a leash for my dog! I am only

practicing how to walk with him in the garden. "

Amused, the father asked, " Can you describe your dog? "

Immediately, Dinku answered, " He is a Malmute. He has a black fur

coat, a brown tummy and upper legs and a white diamond on his forehead. He

has beautiful, brown shining eyes! "

The father was amazed to hear such a detailed description.

A few days later, a paper advertised the sale of a Malmute puppy,

Dinku insisted that she should go to the place of sale. The father did not

want the dog, so he said to her that he would get her the puppy only if

it was exactly as she had described. Dinku agreed.

When the father took Dinku to the place, believe it or not, a puppy

came running and licked the legs of the little girl! The father could

scarcely believe his eyes, for there stood before him a little dog

exactly as Dinku had described.

We draw to ourselves that which we think of. If we think impure

thoughts or thoughts of jealousy, resentment, hatred, ill-will, greed, we

draw to ourselves similar conditions. Therefore, be careful to see that

you think good and noble thoughts, thoughts of purity and peace, of

sympathy and service, of love and joy, of prosperity and success, of health

and happiness and harmony.
