FROM SHRI C.B. SATPATHY'S MESSAGE

……“When any of these most compassionate beings descends on earth in human form, all the Yogis, saints come to know about it through their yogic (divine) perception; it is for His arrival that they have been praying for many lives. When large number of human beings suffer on earth due to tyranny or misrule (Adharma as the Hindus call it), their prayers to Almighty, forces the all-powerful divine power to descend in human form and stabilize the forces of nature (that is establish Dharma). All the forces of nature mirthfully welcome His coming.

When Lord Krishna was born, the saints knew that the suffering souls would be redeemed and liberated as the Narayan Shakti (highest divine power) had descended. When Jesus was born the three wise men from the East i.e. the three spiritual souls from India knew and reached Bethlehem following the star that guided them.

When Lord Budha having entered Nirvana returned to the world to relieve the suffering humanity of their pain and bondage, nature become joyous. It is thus explained in the book captioned “Voice of the Silence” – “all Nature thrills with joyous awe and feels subdued. The silver star now twinkles out the news to the night blossoms, the streamlet to the pebbles ripples out the tales; dark ocean waves will roar to it the rocks surf-bound, scent- laden breezes sing to its vales and stately pines mysteriously whispers -- A Master has arisen, a Master of the Day”.

A pilgrim has returned back from the other shore. Yes, the Masters are coming from that shore, from the abode of the Gods out of their infinite compassion for all of us. The forces of nature on this good earth of ours have started vibrating and tuning themselves for the advent of these mighty divine powers. Some of them are already born and working in a quiet manner in different corners of the earth. Their workers and disciples at various stages of spiritual evolution are also getting ready to welcome them. These disciples in different places of the world are continuously praying for their early advent.

After all, during the last century the earth experienced two devastating wars. The world today is going through a process of ‘intellect explosion’ in all fields of knowledge. Yet a lack of moral value to properly utilized the fruits of intellect for the greatest good of the greatest numbers on this earth in the biggest limitation. It is these Masters who will redefine religions codes and re-establish moral values on earth. Human beings, in future will certainly communicate through mental process and discover those powers, which today are known as occult power of ‘Sidhis’. Sidhi (occult power) is nothing but a principle of nature yet undiscovered by the present human race. When the masters will teach the principles of governing these unexplored laws of natures, new vistas of knowledge will open up before the human race.

The Sadgurus of the present Age are active and are carrying on the administration of the universe as before. They are assisted by a number of spiritual workers functioning at different parts of the world. Until they reveal themselves, no one can really know who they are and cannot have an idea about their activities. When the time comes they will reveal themselves and the whole world will come to recognize these Sadgurus and shall surrender to them. We can only pray to Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi the ‘Incarnation of the Age’ to reveal the divine mystery to us. We surrender to these magnificent divine beings to bless us.".........

FROM "LIFE OF SAI BABA" BY NARASIMHA SWAMI

……“ The world is too much with us; late and soon,Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers.

Wordsworth says that it is much better to be a pagan and have visions of Proteus and Triton rather than be a highly civilized man without any such visions. But worldly men will always be worldly men. Few care to change their nature completely and begin a new life. To get to great ends, one must abandon all earthly ambition and face poverty and obloquy, if need be, calmly and cheerfully and hold on to the Guru as the be-all and end-all of one's existence.

This high ideal we find in the diary is held up before Khaparde for his consideration and concentration. But he never cared to accept that ideal. Passivity was anathema to him. He preferred even at Shirdi, when he could always contact Baba, to spend his time reading up every bit of newspaper and writing letters to friends. Once Baba wanted to draw his attention to the absurdity of frittering away time like that at his age and stage and Baba asked him what he was doing and what he had been doing in the morning. His answer being writing letters, Baba's comment was 'It is better to move your fingers instead of sitting idle'. The next day, even in the act of writing letters Khaparde went to sleep.

The tamas in him was so powerful that he was frequently indulging in long sleep when he ought to have attended to artis and classes or kept busy. For a healthy man of only 58 (Khaparde's age at that time) day sleep was not wanted at all. Yet Khaparde was having long spells of day sleep and sometimes he slept away when the noonday arti was going on in the Masjid.

When Baba was told that Khaparde could not be roused up by people calling at his place, Baba said that he himself would wake Khaparde up. Khaparde was roused up just before the close of the noonday arati about '1 or 2 p.m. and thus was made to attend that arti. Baba gave him good advice not to allow this tamasic tendency of oversleeping, but Khaparde was unable to follow that advice. Hence for one reason or another, the ideals kept before him by Baba were not achieved even in such small matters as keeping awake.

As for facing poverty, Khaparde notes how bitter it was to him. On the 1st February 1912, when Baba said that Dixit should give Rs. 200 to his (K's) wife, Khaparde notes in his diary as already stated 'Has it come to this? I prefer death to this'. He adds that Baba wanted to put down his pride. But his pride could not be put down. Baba wanted to show the pettiness of the "great objects" that were greatly moving the heart and soul of Khaparde. Wealth was the chief aim.

On the 13th February, Baba pointed out, 'Here is the cow of Dixit. Formerly it was a Jalna man's. Before that it was somebody else's and before that it was Mahlsapathy's. God knows whose it is'. He was pointing out that property was not anything permanent and not worth striving for. On the other hand he pointed out that so far as the absolute needs of the body were concerned, a person who had firm faith had no fear of lacking them. Baba gave the assurance that none who had firm faith in God would be left in want.

Baba also gave the assurance that He was powerful and his orders were supreme. Baba also pointed out the obverse of the above story. In referring to one of his earlier lives, he said that his father at that time was a rich man. Having differences with his father, he left his father and went away. Finding a heap of treasure on the way, he was doting on the same and spending his time thereon. This, Baba said, made him a cobra, that is, a very inferior species of rajasic and tamasic creature. This was the effect of over-fondness towards wealth.

Baba pointed out that he got disgusted with that later on, left the treasure, and resumed his human form. Thus Baba tried to hold up before Khaparde the pettiness of men who were hankering after wealth, wealth of the world that never lasts. How was Khaparde to get his wealth? Only by seeking the favour of innumerable persons and avoiding the displeasure of others.

All this required that his time and attention should be wasted upon petty creatures. Baba told him that he must serve God alone and he also repeated that advice. Baba said, 'What God gives lasts for ever; what man gives does not'. This was repeated time and again to Khaparde, but all that was lost upon him.".....

DEVOTEE EXPERIENCE

About two weeks ago my mother was diagnosed with slightly high levels of cholesterol during her routine medical check up. My mother has not had any cholesterol related issues in the past. She took two tests to reconfirm and they showed high levels; so this caused me to worry. I prayed Baba regarding this and sought His help. And requested my mother to visit the blood test center again (watching her diet for a day). When my mother showed up at the same test center again - the medical technician read her previous results (she did not do another test) and assured that the cholesterol levels were high because of what she ate recently and this occurs normally.

I thank Baba for this reassurance. I also believe in the phrase “God helps those who help themselves" so my mother is now proactive and is watching her diet. But I am very thankful for Baba's grace.

I pray Baba showers Grace on all His children and gives them wisdom.

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Need for Puja or Prayer

In simple terms, prayer means communicating with Guru/God. Prayer or Puja can be Direct or Indirect/ Actual or Mental. Offering of actual objects like kumkum, flowers, naivedya, fragrance, lighting diyas etc to an idol / murti/ picture /form etc constitutes pratyaksh puja. If the same object(s) is offered mentally or in one’s imagination to God, this will constitute apratyaksh or manas puja. Constant remembrance of God / Name of God (Naam Jaap) is said to be the most effective prayer.

Prayer means conveying your thoughts, beliefs, fears, aspirations, needs to God. Most often, we pray to God for expressing our gratitude or to seek favour with a belief that He is the bestower of everything we need. We believe that God has a vast, unimaginable and replenishable reservoir of unlimited divine powers and boons.

We pray with awe. We pray in fear. We pray when we want some material object/ position/ service etc. We pray when we want things to go easy for us. We pray when we are sick. We also pray for forgiveness from God. We pray when we want thorns in our life to turn into colorful petals. Some people pray without any reason because praying becomes a habit with them. However, such people are very rare.

We pray when we realize that things are not in our control. When we bend our head down in prayer, we surrender our ego at the feet of Lord. At that moment we admit that we are nothing but helpless in front of His Supreme divine power. We admit that He is magnificent. We admit that the Lord is our fortress where we are absolutely safe. When we agree to receive from someone it implies that we have surrendered our ego, it reflects our humility. This means that we have realized we are incapable of manifesting what we are seeking.

Pre-requisites for Prayer - Of course there is no dearth of people who are seen asking for favours from fellow human beings with a belief that they can fulfill their needs. However, instead of asking for favours from fellow beings, we must pray to God Who gives to each and all. Baba often said ‘Sabka Malik Ek’ and His mantra to win over God was ‘Shraddha’ and ‘Saburi’ which will help us in crossing any hardship in our life.

Faith and Trust in God comes automatically if we Love God in thoughts, words and action. Patience to wait for the outcome of my prayer to manifest takes away the sting of suffering. We often lack this. Most of the time faith and patience swing like a pendulum depending upon our present life situations. Needless to mention, most of our prayers are for materialistic gains rather than for spiritual blessings. Another prerequisite for puja is purity of mind, heart, body and soul.

What should we pray for? When I sit down to pray often I am confused about what to ask for. Baba said so many times that His treasury is full and people can take whatever they want but people ask for worldly things only whereas He wants to give more.

So many times I have tried to imagine what I would do if Saibaba gave me His divine darshan and asked me what my wish is? I would be totally speechless in front of Him. I would have nothing to ask for. If I found the Lord then there would be nothing left to seek. For God is our final destination.

The Bible says seek the Kingdom of God, which is within you. I believe that if I seek God himself, Kingdom will automatically follow but then there will be no need for Kingdom anymore. The thought itself is so awesome. I doubt if I am deserving enough to reach that stage. Only God knows what my qualifications are.

Sometimes, devotees don’t pray with humility but make demands. However, it is felt that we should refrain from making demands from God for it is considered as a demonic virtue.

Wise people say that God knows what is good for us and He will bless us with the same, time and again, at the most right and appropriate moment.

Benefits of prayer - Over the years I have come to understand that I pray to reach that hidden and unseen sanctuary of peace and silence within me where the Supreme God resides. With my eyes closed or open, I utilize my prayer time to talk to God just as I would talk to a respected elderly person.

I convey my fears and insecurities, my needs and seek His guidance to turn my thoughts and actions towards a positive direction so that I can meet Him as soon as possible. They say it is difficult to understand the ways of God. I feel that it is possible to understand God provided He showers His Grace on us. For that we have to reach that highest pinnacle of humaneness. The power of prayer is so strong that with Grace of God everything becomes possible. It is said that even a single prayer can convert a war-like situation into peace. A mind in prayer is always surrounded by a pious aura and sends out positive vibrations in the Universe.

Baba would often tell His devotees that He is within them and does not consider His devotees to be separate from Him. Baba listens to all our spoken and unspoken thoughts and words. So many times I wonder if I have that finesse that will enable God to reside in me.

Prayers are very powerful. When we pray from depth of our heart, our wish is fulfilled. But our faith shakes when our prayer remains unanswered. We feel God is not looking at us. We blame either God or ourselves. It rarely occurs to us that if our prayer remained unfulfilled then it must be for our own benefit.

Sometimes not having something is better than having that thing. If you look back in your life, you will find that most of the time the biggest grace of God came to you when things did not happen the way you wanted. When a bad time comes in our life, it awakens us to so many inner and outer realities of life.

Struggling and finding a way out of our hardship is a blessing that God has bestowed on us by not fulfilling our wish because God loves us and wants us to develop our faith, patience, character. So many times we get what we want but that same blessing separates us from God further because once we get what we want, we forget to pray again till another adversity starts to loom its head in our life.

Therefore, if we are spiritually strong, we will not be affected if the prayer does not yield the desired result. Most of us feel that once our material desires are fulfilled and we retire from family obligations we will pray for spiritual grace. However, I feel that we should not wait till old age to ask for such an important blessing.

All through our life along with our material needs we should pray to God for guiding us in the righteous direction. We should atone for our mistakes and pray to God to give us enough discrimination so that we do not make such mistakes again. A lot of people confess their sins to the Lord and seek His pardon. How relieving that must be.

Faith or trusting in God means that if the wish is not fulfilled we should understand that it must be for our own good which we are unable to understand in given circumstances. We are children of God. He would give us all that that we need and much more at the appropriate time provided we are qualified for receiving the same. A sincere and heartfelt prayer will take us to the final destination – to attain nirvana (liberation from cycle of birth & death) and become Godlike.

Love is the only wealth that does not diminish. It is the property of God. Therefore, cultivate pure and selfless love. God's love will always follow you wherever you are and will protect you at all times. Do not ever consider that money alone constitutes your wealth. In fact, love is your real wealth. The wealth of love always grows; it never diminishes. Only those who realize the principle of love will be able to understand this truth.

I find the Heritage of Shirdi Sai magazine very enriching. You are really doing a great job. The Sai Heritage E-zine is a very good effort and we feel tremendously enriched by reading it.The article by Satpathyji is so simple and clear that it actually makes a mark on the mind. I have read this chapter so many times in Sai Satcharitra but never understood it so well. Indeed, only a Guru can explain it like this. Keep up the good work!Ashalatha, USA

Thanks a lot for such an enlightening Maha Samadhi Message, Sai Ezine Vol 66. I really liked the statement "We usually say we forgive someone/some act but cannot forget their mistake". May Baba be with us and guide us in everything we do.
