Today people study the Vedas and other scriptures as a ritual; they do not put into practice any of their injunctions. Of what avail is it merely to know how the Vedas and Upanishads have described the Divine when this knowledge is not reflected in one's life? Such a person is like a blind man who hears about the existence of the world but is unable to see it. There is no difference between a physically blind man and a spiritually blind person who merely studies the scriptures. The scriptures are meant to provide guidance for practical living and not merely to be learnt by rote.

Heute studieren die Menschen die Veden und andere Schriften als ein Ritual; sie setzen keine ihrer Ermahnungen in die Praxis um. Von welchem Nutzen ist es, nur zu wissen, wie die Veden und die Upanishaden das Göttliche beschrieben haben, wenn sich dieses Wissen im eigenen Leben nicht widerspiegelt? Solch eine Person ist wie ein blinder Mann, der von der Existenz der Welt hört, aber unfähig ist, sie zu sehen. Da ist kein Unterschied zwischen einem physisch blinden Mann und einer spirituell blinden Person, die die Schriften nur studiert. Die Schriften sind dazu gedacht, Führung im praktischen Leben zu ermöglichen und nicht bloß um auswendig gelernt zu werden.

Dewasa ini banyak orang yang mempelajari Veda dan kitab-kitab suci lainnya hanya sekedar sebagai ritual belaka; sebab mereka ternyata tidak mempraktekkan ajaran-ajaran yang terkandung di dalam kitab-kitab itu! Apa gunanya bersusah-payah mempelajari bagaimana Veda dan Upanishads menjelaskan tentang Divine, apabila ternyata ajaran-ajaran tersebut toh tidak akan diterapkan dalam kehidupanmu? Orang seperti ini dapat diibaratkan seperti orang buta yang hanya mendengarkan penjelasan tentang keindahan dunia, namun ia sendiri tidak bisa melihatnya. Tiada perbedaan antara orang yang secara fisik buta dengan mereka yang buta secara spiritual tadi. Kitab-kitab suci berguna sebagai pedoman dalam kehidupan praktis sehari-hari dan bukan untuk dihafal secara luar kepala.

Oggi la gente studia i Vedas e altre scritture come fosse un rituale; essi sono i primi a non mettere in pratica ciò che leggono. A che serve conoscere come i Vedas e le Upanishads hanno descritto il Divino, se poi questa conoscenza non viene riflessa nella vita? Tali persone sono come un uomo cieco che sente parlare dell’esistenza del mondo, ma non può vederlo. Non c’è alcuna differenza tra chi è fisicamente cieco ed una persona cieca spiritualmente che semplicemente studia le scritture. Le scritture devono servire da guida per la vita pratica e non semplicemente essere imparate a memoria.

Hoy día la gente estudia los Vedas y otras escrituras como un ritual; no pone en práctica alguno de sus preceptos . ¿De qué sirve conocer solamente cómo los Vedas y los Upanishads han descrito lo Divino, si este conocimiento no se refleja en la vida de uno? Tal persona es como un hombre ciego que oye acerca de la existencia del mundo pero es incapaz de verlo. No hay diferencia entre un hombre físicamente ciego y, una persona espiritualmente ciega que meramente estudia las escrituras. La escrituras intentan proporcionar una guía para la vida práctica y no están simplemente para ser aprendidas de memoria.
