Guest guest
Namaste Hiroppi, ivory is part of the elephant and elephants are hunted cruelly for this. Elephants are representations of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obtacles, bestower of blessings and Keeper of Akashic Records. Hence if one owns a piece of genuine ivory carved from an elephant which had suffered violently, can you imagine the karma attached to it? In modern times, there are many makers of " fake ivory " using a kind of plastic resin, rice product (I think, but cannot recall the name) and gum to make ornaments that resemble genuine ivory. After the blocks are produced, some ornaments are produced by machinery while others are bought by craftsmen for carving into historical replicas. Would advice you to stay away from the current fashion of " ivory items " in Japan.
