I know you all understand when I say that >my hunger for Truth is insatiable. I certainly do. I've dedicated my life to it. There is no other real work for " me " but finding truth and losing ignorance (basically one and the same thing). In fact, there is no CHOICE for me. I was led into this way of life, almost " forced, " by the fact that samsara holds little or nothing for me anymore. To " give up " now would be tantamount to suicide. Thanks be to Grace for that fact!!! I have also been touched very deeply by Swami Vivekananda's words, and in fact once on another list I asked for a moment of silence to honor the man and what he contributed. Out of the two books I've ever purchased over the Internet, one of them is " Living at the Source, " and this book serves as a sort of bible to me. Sometimes if feeling disconnected from the Infinite Self that I am, just reading a chapter or two will restore that sense of connection. Like you, I think his words come as close as words could ever come to communicating an EXPERIENCE of truth, not just " pointing at the moon. " A full communication is, of course, impossible, but Vivekananda does everything with words that could ever be done. >I love all of you very much and would enjoy hearing about who you are and >about your lives. You have all touched me so deeply. To be able to >communicate with other Vedantists is nothing short of a miracle to me since I >live far from any temple. Same here, I live far from any temple (there is a bookshop in the Seattle area, but that's about it). I live within the Seattle, WA. city limits, near the Sea-Tac Int'l. Airport. I'm also too old to ever get started in a formal monastic program (I'll be 35 in August), but I don't think it's necessary. There are so many resources now available thanks to the Internet that I think it is now possible for Atman to be one's own Guru. I've met many on other lists who I feel strongly are realized, yet have never " formally " participated in any religion, or monastery. They found that Self can be not only an adequate but a wonderful guide. Right now I'm on disability (for depression and panic disorder, both of which are in full remission) and living alone in an apartment with the assistance of my parents. Sometimes I go as long as 5 days with no human contact whatsoever, and this is precisely where I'm supposed to be right now. I love this - it's my " yogi in a cave " period where there are few or no interruptions to introspection and sadhana. Later, when I'm ready to bring realization out into the everyday world, I think circumstances will coincide in such a way as to do just that. I trust deeply in Grace, that things will ALWAYS coincide in such a way as to bring me to where I am supposed to be at any particular time.
