Dathura According to the vamana purana it grew out of Shiva's chest and the Garuda purana gives instructions for ritual offerings of Datura to Shiva. Bel Patra Legend has it that one night Lord Shiva's devotee, a hunter, lost his way in the forest. As he was wandering in the night, he heard a tiger growl. The frightened man scurried up the nearest tree that was a Bel tree. He spent the night up there, out of the reach of tigers. To keep himself awake, he kept plucking and dropping Bel leaves while chanting the name of Lord Shiva. The next morning, when the devotee climbed down, he had unknowingly dropped thousands of leaves on a Shiva linga. The night-long worship pleased Lord Shiva who saved the hunter from the clutches of a tiger. This legend is recited on every Maha Shivratri. It protects the worshipper from all evils and fears. Black till (sesame) Black til is mixed in either milk/ water and then offered to Shiva in the form of Abhishek. It is equivalent to doing abhishek with 'punchamrat' (a combination of 5 things). Vibhuti (Bhasma) Vibhuti (Bhasma) "Bha" implies Bhartsana "to destroy" and "sma" implies smaranam "to remember". The application of Bhasma therefore signifies destruction of the evil and remembrance of the divine. Bhasma is called Vibhuti ("glory") as it gives glory to one who applies it and raksha (protection) as it protects the wearer from ill health and evil, by purifying him or her. Bhasma is specially associated with Lord Shiva, and it is applied all over his idol / lingam. The devotees apply bhasma as a tripundra (the form of three lines) on the forehead. Mrutyunjaya mantra should be chanted whilst applying ash./dispCategory.php?catId=27 & spcKewd=Shiv%20puja%20items
