He is considered the epitome of beauty, valour, generosity and compassion.Although essentially a God of the Tamils, Murugan has been mentioned in Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra’, Patanjali’s works, ‘Kumarasambhavam,’ an epic poem by Kalidasa and in the Sanskrit drama ‘Mricchakatika.’The worship of ‘Kumara’ was one of the six principal sects of Hinduism at the time of Adi Shankara. In many Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu, Subramaniam can be found to the left of the main deity. The essence of Murugan will be captured by the students of the Auckland based Academy of Bharata Natyam as they present

Kandanin Perumai at the Auckland Girls Grammar School on July 4.The Academy’s principal and artistic director Rema Sunder, known to follow the Pandanallur style of Bharata Natyam, is honing the talent of the young danseuses, confident of presenting a dance drama that will not only bring out the glory of the Tamil God but also the dancing prowess of New Zealand’s younger generation. The Lord would be praised through the time-honoured dance tradition and classical dance enthusiasts can look for such sequences as Subramanya Kavuthuvam, Thillana and Kavadi Chindu.A number of dance forms, set to the taste of folk would bring the lives and times of Kuravas (Chenchus in Andhra), inhabitants of hilly areas, with the

men renowned for their hunting skills and women for the singing and fortune-telling acumen.Kandanin Perumai will also feature a famous composition of Nakkeran, a poet of the Muthamizh Sangam, set up by the Pandyan King in the Ninth Century AD. Called, ‘Arupadai Veedu Konda Thiru Muruga,’ it describes the six abodes of Lord Murugan and why they were established. But the proceeds from the sale of tickets (at $10) alone would not suffice to fund the project and would depend on the community’s cash contributions.Source - http://www.indiannewslink.co.nz/index.php/entertainmentlink/3251.html"Dance is the Sign Language of the Soul"Soul-itary Reaper - roHit beHaL
