Namaskar Aksha.rudra,

When reciting Ganesha's Beeja mantra aloud, it should sound like "GuNg". The sound of GuNg occurs when the tongue does not touch the roof or base of the mouth. Its pronounciation is like the English word "gong" except in the case of the Beeja mantra, the "o" is replaced with "u". This "u" should sound like an "a" as in "ah hah". When practising silent meditation, the sound of "Gam" is technically correct.

Anyway, please listen carefully to this chant from YouTube which has the correct sound of "GuNg". Its called Ganapati Bappa Morya:
