Hari Om!,

The Lord is known by infinite names and forms.

Each and every name of the Lord has infinite potential and is enough to make u

perfect.

What is needed is faith and devotion to a single mantra and the related form of

God.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says :-

" Oh! Lord, I am so unfortunate that I fail to comprehend the true power of ur

name "

The mantra must be chanted constantly, unconditionally, unmotivatedly,

offenselessly ,

not only with devotion but with desperation.

If practiced in this manner, soon u shall be free from all suffering.

Jai Sri Krishna.

hi,

Regarding Shri Ramakrishna writing the mantra on the stretched tongue, he

himself said somewhere after writing the mantra on a devotee's tongue " now your

tongue on its own will chant the mantra continously " .

As the story of Kalidasa, the great poet goes, he was a ignorant shephard turned

into a great scholar by the grace of mother goddess who wrote a " Bijakshara " on

his tongue.

regards,

Vikas

Hi Chris,

There are two books on meditation from the Ramakrishna Order

that I like:

1. Meditation and Spiritual Life by Swami Yatiswarananda

and 2. Meditation--Monks of the Ramakrishna Order. I obtained

these from the Vedanta Society of Western Washington whose bookstore

inventory is available on line. The Vedanta Society of Sothern

California has a large bookstore on line. You might enjoy

looking at the different sites of the Vedanta Centers. Just

type in Vedanta on Google. Thank you for allowing me to make a

suggestion. ew

Hello,

My name is Chris and Im new to the group. I do not

live near anyone who can give advice on meditation. Is this

list an acceptable place to ask questions about meditation especially

mantra meditation?

Also, are there any books or websites anyone can

recomend? Im not only interested in the benefits of mantra

meditation but especially the actual practice of mantra

meditation. I am only somewhat familiar with So Hum mantra or

the " aum " mantra.

I should mention that I am not an absolute

beginner as I have practice Buddhist meditation intensively for

about 5 years.

Looking forward to your responses,

Chris

Dear Chris: I myself practice introspection and meditation with OM. In a nutshell, OM represents an inner journey from the waking world, to the Atman, or to the real "Person", or Purusha. The problem with our existence is that most people, alias, beings, identify with the outside world. We think we are the body, emotions, and even the mind. But the Self is beyond that. AUM is hailed by the greatest sages of India: seers, yogis, swamis, as the single best technique that can be used for God/Self Realization. If you read the Upanishads, especially the Mandukya and Mundaka Upanishads, you will learn what OM is really about. I personally like OM because Sri Ramakrishna has told us that OM represents God in both personal and impersonal forms. So it is a complete prayer and meditation. You have left nothing out. Swami Vivekenanda said that speech begins with "A" at the base

of the throat, "U" is the middle range of speech, and the "M" is the end of speech with the mouth closed. So, whatever could be said within the range of human vocalcords is implied in AUM. You have prayed all holy prayers just by praying and invoking AUM (OM). Focus your mind on the spot between your eyebrows. Chant OM. You will feel deep peace and bliss. It is verily God blessing you with His Ananda, or Joy. Here is an article from one Swami that you might enjoy: http://www.swami-krishnananda.org/mand_0.html God Bless and OM Shanti, Keith Johnson

Dear Chris,

If you have practised Buddhist meditation for five years then why do you want to change now?

As far as I know the following have to be taken care of if you want to meditate on a mantra;

1. The mantra should be alive. In this age all the mantras are dead. But certain mantras have been kept alive by a lineage practicing them. Therefore it is very essential that you get a mantra from a proper person. Simply picking up a mantra from a book does not serve any purpose.

2. After getting the mantra you chant it and reflect on it's meaning.

3. You follow the rules as laid down by the lineage practicing the mantra.

Regards,

Jagannath.

Namaste Sidinfomail,

Good to hear you've got 13 mukhi rudraksha for enhancing attraction. Mantra

should be chanted 108 times each day. If you wish to undertake mantra sadhana,

then do it for 45 or 90 days.
