1. You must take care of the body. Body is like a boat. Life is like a river. On this side is the world; on the other side is God. And so, to reach the other side, that is to reach God, you must maintain this boat carefully. You can keep the boat for any length of time in the water; there is no danger. But if the water comes into the boat, then there is danger. You can remain in the world for any number of years, but don't let the world take hold.

2. There is the example of the lotus. It stays deep down in the mud. It comes up to the light, and it can't stay without water because it would die. But it does not get mixed up either with the mud or the water. You have seen the lotus; even if the water comes it just goes off again. You need to be like the lotus.

3. Pleasure and pain come together just as the bitter rind and sweet juice coexist in an orange.

4. You cannot enjoy the sweet juice of sugarcane unless it is crushed.

Likewise, gold has to be put in fire, hammered and cut before it is made into a beautiful jewel. Similarly, you will shine only when you undergo trials and tribulations.

5. If there is sugar at the bottom of a tumbler of water, you can make the water sweet by stirring the sugar to dissolve it. Likewise, your heart is a tumbler at the bottom of which there is Divinity. Take the spoon of intellect; stir the heart by the process of spiritual effort. Only then would the Divinity permeate the entire body.

6. The diamond is at first just a dull piece of stone, a hard pebble. Only when it is cut by a skilled artisan does it shine brilliantly like a flame. Allow yourselves to be treated by the Master so that all your dullness will disappear and you will emerge effulgent as a resplendent diamond. You cannot welcome joy and reject grief at the same time.

7. The important task of the mango tree is to produce mango fruits. The leaves, the branches, and the trunk of the tree are useful, in their own way, no doubt; but the main aim is the fruit. So also from the plantain tree, the fruit is the main gain. The leaves, the edible core of the stem, these are all incidental. So too, my task is not merely to cure and console, remove individual misery. It is something far more important. My main task is the re-establishment of the Vedas and the Shaastras in the heart of everyone and the revival of knowledge about them.

8. However high a bird may soar, it has sooner or later to perch on a tree top, to enjoy quiet. So too, a day will come when even the most haughty, the most unbelieving and even those who assert that there is no joy or peace in the contemplation of the highest self, will have to pray.

9. Life is like a flight of steps towards the Godhead. You have your foot on the1st step when you are born; each day is a step that must be climbed; Do not count the steps ahead or exult over the steps behind. 1 step at a time and that well climbed, is enough success to be satisfied with and to give you encouragement for the next one. Do not slide from the step you have got up on. Every step is a victory to be cherished; every day wasted is a defeat to be ashamed of. Slow and steady - let that be your maxim! You just WATCH your 'thoughts, words & deeds'. (See photo)
