The day of Ratha Saptami is celebrated all over India but the highlight of this most important day has to be in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam.

Ratha Saptami is a most sacred festival that falls on the 7th day of the bright half of Hindu month Magha which falls today on Monday, February 2nd this year.

Lord Vishnu in his form as Surya is usually worshipped on this day. Ratha Saptami begins in households with a purification bath before Sunrise by holding a few bilva leaves on one's head while bathing and chanting surya names which is supposed to invoke the benevolence of the Lord in all that one takes up in the rest of the year.It also involves doing a puja with flowers, fruits etc.

This day is also known as Surya Jayanti because it celebrates the Power of Sun God who is a Divine incarnation of Sri Mahavishnu.

There are two main temples of Sun God in India one is at Arasavalli just a mile outside of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and the second one is in Konark in Orissa.

There are many names for Him like Ravi, Bhaskarudu, Banudu, Divakarudu etc. Each name has its own effects. Over all Sun God is known as Aditya Hridayam.
