Namaste Gina, mustard oil is recommended for maintaining Rudraksha

(being Shiva's Beads) and mentioned in Shiv Purana somewhere.

However, there are many people highly allergic to mustard oil which

is governed by Mars (as considered by some). Mustard oil is " hot " and

it also represents " fire " . Some people are also allergic to olive

oil though less so. Some folks use til (sesame), almond, avocado or

grapeseed base oils mixed with sandalwood oil without problems. Make

sure the sandalwood oil is essential oil and not synthetic.

No matter what type of oil you use, rudraksha always turns a darker

color with the passage of time. Darker spots may appear first, then

gradually the whole bead may turn the same rich, darker color. This

actually gives the bead more lustre. Color changes do not affect the

beads at all.

If your 'friend' Baba is your Guruji, you should seek his opinion

further and guidance too. Ask his blessings before you change from

mustard oil.
