Balasubramanian <gbsub1Sat, Mar 14, 2009 at 8:17 AM IMPORTANCE OF NAMASANKEERTAN-4 , saibabadivine , saigroup_borivali_samithi SAI RAMs, Man is gifted with a human body as aresult of merits(punya) accumulated in past births. One should make utmost use of this human form to reach God as one can not be sure of getting human birth again. With the help of this body alone and while in this body alone we should practise Bhakti (devotion) and attain liberation or freedom from the cycle of births and deaths. Therefore, we must always remember God. In the Bhagawad Gita,Lord Krishna says, " He who remembers Me at his last moment in this world comes to me. Otherwise, he goes to wherever he thinks of at his last breath " . Now let us try to understand onething. Last moment , as stated above does not refer to the death-bed only. Nobody can anticipate as to when one`s last moment is going to come. Again, can we be certain that we will able to recollect the Lord`s name at our last breath?. In the Mukundamala, the sage prays " When the life-breath is about to leave the body which is afflicted by severe illness and when the voice is choked or when one has lost his memory and other faculties, where is the question of remembering you? " Hence namasankeertan has to become a way of life. There was recently a old man in South India who was in his death bed. All his sons who were employed abroad had assembled at that moment. The eldest son took his father on his lap and was slowly spoon-feeding the Holy Ganges water in his father`s mouth. The son said to his father, " Dad,pl. keep repeating the name of Rama " . The old man replied very clearly , " If I could do so would I have not done it all these days. " And there came his last breath. So,even at the death bed the old man could not take the Holy two-lettered name of the Lord, but could talk a full sentence expressing his inability to do so. Wedo not know for certain as to when we will breathe our last. Hence, constant practise of namasankeertan is essential. The last sloka of Srimad Bhagavatam describes the importance of Nama Sankeertanam as follows:- NAAMA SANKEERTANAM YASYA SARVAPAPA PRANASANAM PRANAAMO DUHKHA SAMANTA TAM NAMAMI HARIM PARAM It means, " He, the Lord whose Name when chanted destroys all sins, He, who removes all sorrows when one prostrates, to such Hari ,I bow down " . We ned to cultivate Namasankeertan as something spontaneous and habitual. (to be continued) G.Balasubramanian
