Tarkarli, the state's pristine beach - around 546km from Mumbai in Malvan - has emerged as the preferred destination this summer. Already, hotel bookings have reached 98%, the highest among the 18 popular tourist destinations in Maharashtra. Good old Mahabaleshwar comes a close second, with resorts and hotels running at 90-95% capacity. Other popular destinations include Tadoba and Shirdi. In Mahabaleshwar, the MTDC has over 400 beds; private resorts and bed-and-breakfast schemes account for 3,000. MTDC and private hoteliers are not complaining. "We have over 8,500 beds (including bed-and-breakfast schemes) in our resorts, and the number of beds is almost eight times more in private hotels. Overall, the bookings are touching the 90% mark in May alone with Tarkarli, Mahabaleshwar, Tadoba and Shirdi leading the tally,'' said MTDC general manager Vijay Chavan. The temple of Saibaba at Shirdi and the Tadoba tiger reserve in Chandrapur have emerged as the third and fourth top destinations, with bookings in resorts and dharmashalas in Shirdi touching the 80% mark.
