In Treta Yuga when wealth and power corrupted the Kshitriyas and they started oppressing and tormenting the other casts, including killing the Brahmins, Lord Parashuram, the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, worshipped Lord Shiva and got the divine axe with which HE killed the evil Kshitriyas and restored Dharma. It is Parashurama who first gave the Srividya – Srichakra worship to the world in his treatise known as the Parashurama Kalpa Sooktam. He fought the advancing ocean and saved the lands of Konkan and Malabar - the Maharashtra - Karnataka - Kerala west coastline.
