The Jagannath Temple of Puri in Orissa in Bharat is one of the four most famous holy pilgrimages of Hindus. The festival of Rath Yatra celebrated in Puri on the second day of bright fortnight of Ashada month (June-July) is world famous for the enormous crowd of devotees that gathers to witness Lord Jagannath's yearly journey in his huge chariot.

Lord Jagannath, with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, goes to his garden house ('Gandecha Ghar') for five days, visiting his aunt on the way. At the end of the five days, the three siblings are brought back to Jagannath Temple in a procession called the Ultarath.

This most important Rath yatra of Puri takes place starting today Wednesday, June 24th.

The Rath Yatra is a great festival because of its ability to unite people in its festivity. All people, rich and poor, Brahmins or shudras equally enjoy the fairs and the joy they bring.

You will be amazed to know that even Muslims participate in Rath Yatras! Muslim residents of Narayanpur, a village of about a thousand families in the Subarnapur district of Orissa, regularly take part in the festival, from building the chariots to pulling the rath.
