Gandhi's words among announcements on London UndergroundPTIThursday, June 25, 2009 15:05 ISTLondon:The next time you travel on London's Underground,Gandhi's famous quote, "An eyefor an eye makes the whole world blind", maycatch your attention among the serviceannouncements.Not only Gandhi, quotations by Sartre, Einsteinand other great thinkers will beinterspersed between the service announcements asa part of a novel initiative byLondon transport authorities to make travelling on the underground enjoyable.Transport for London, the company responsible forthe Underground, has commissionedaward-winning artist Jeremy Deller to compile alist of quotations by Gandhi andothers that can be mixed with the driver's announcements.The initiative will soon be rolled out on thePiccadilly Line, and trials have alreadyelicited enthusiastic response from passengers.Driver Susy Wells told BBCduring a trial "This job can be a bitmonotonous sometimes. So it's brilliant andthe passengers do love it".Some passengers, however, were not comfortablewith being compelled to listen towords of wisdom from great thinkers while rushing to work.The London Underground has a series of culturalinitiatives also that includes paintingson stations, poems inside carriages and loaningfree novels outside five stations.©2009 PTI.
