Instead of asking, try sitting in meditation, and utterly quiet the mind so

that there are no thoughts. Then invite Grace to come in with an open

heart, and such questions will never again be meaningful.

Only experience can remove ignorance. In such questions as you ask, you

will only find further questions, and more confusion. The more you know,

the more you will find that there is nothing that can be known, or need be

known.

Swami Vivekananda said if you want to stop or quiet the mind then hit

yourself over the head with a baseball bat. That will quiet your mind.

" Meditation and Its Methods " is a wonderful book by Swamiji on meditation.

As a teacher of meditation for the last 20 years, I can tell you that Swami

Vivekananda's teachings about letting the mind run free, giving it free rein

is the only way to get into the state of meditation. When we attempt to

quiet the mind, it becomes more unruly. You may want to read that book and

also " Meditation " by the Monks of the Ramakrishna Order. That is a wonderful

book on various methods for meditation.

Not be bothered by it's wandering if one continues to concentrate on

mantraa or prayer. It also works . One can also divert the mind to

peaceful n pleasant thoughts that help it go quicker in to meditative

state.

Continuing to concentrate on mantrams or prayers, the mind tends to quiet

of itself.

I agree with these posts, that the mind cannot be quieted by will. But the

mind can become quiet of itself, as a result of doing other things.

Concentration is one. I also have " my own " technique of active listening,

that is - ignoring all thoughts in the mind (to the extent possible) and

listening to sounds around as absolutely intently as possible.

Visualization on one thing (the visual equivalent of a mantram) also works

quite well... for example, I envision myself in a field of clear white

light, then " become " that field of light, so there is no " myself " there

anymore.

I like to experiment in meditation. I've found many " nonscriptural "

techniques that produce a meditative state and a quiet mind. What works

for one, may not work for another.

Forever standing free of dogma,

Tim
