Swami Vivekananda was reluctant to study this text. Sri Ramakrishna had to

tell him, " Read it out to me " . Thus Swami Vivekananda began his study of

this most extraordinary text of the Hindu tradition.

May I request list members to contribute on the interesting aspects of this

dialogue between King Janaka and Astawakra.

Namaste

I've read thru this book and found it to be so profound. I agree with Sri

Jay that this text is really extraordinary. I personally love this book

although I believe that I am not fit to read this at this stage of my life.

This book is advised to be studied by advanced sadhakas who have purified

themselves by karma and for those equipped with the scriptural knowledge of

Advaita Vedanta (like Vivekacudamani, Atma Bodha etc). It seems that

Swamiji went into samadhi everytime he read the verses to Sri Ramakrishna.

That's why Sri Ramakrishna had to order him to read it out. Eventually,

Swamiji went into deep samadhi just by reading this text. It is a fantastic

manual for all Jnana Yogis.

The complete text can be found at:

Om Shanti

If anyone sees a copy of " The Heart of Awareness, a translation of the

Ashtavakra Gita " by Thomas Byrom (Shambhala Dragon Editions), grab it!

The Ashravakra is translated into the most beautiful and clear prose

poetry. Unfortunately it is no longer in print and Thomas Byrom no

longer alive.
