Chapter 2

Verse 17

I am pure Consciousness. Through ignorance I have imposed limitations upon

myself. Constantly reflecting in this way, I am abiding in the Absolute.

Verse 20

Body, heaven and hell, bondage and freedom, as also fear, all these are mere

imagination. What have I to do with all these - I whose nature is Pure

Consciousness.

Dear Everyone,

Philosophically, Vedanta deals with the explanation of Consciousness. As

a science, it is the derivation of scientific laws about Consciousness

based on the experiences and knowledge of the Seers who have intuitively

realized the Truth during their meditation and altered state of

consciousness - samadhi. As a religion, Vedanta is the practice based on

the combination of the philosophy and science for realizing our real

nature as Consciousness.

The philosophy of Vedanta in general, and Advaita Vedanta in particular,

maintains that there is only one reality as Absolute Consciousness, also

called as Brahman, Atman, God, or Self. Out of ignorance we perceive

this One Reality as multifarious. This cosmic ignorance is called as

Maya. With spiritual practice, one is able to transcend the limitations

of body and mind so as to become one with the Reality. This is the aim

of human birth. Scores of great souls have realized the Self in this

manner, and of course, it is also our right too. To realize this goal,

certain spiritual practices are undertaken known as Yoga, viz.

Raja-Yoga, Jnana-Yoga, Bhakti-Yoga, and Karma-Yoga.

Thanks, Dr. Shah. On my website (in the signature after this message)

there is a " fourfold path to enlightenment " page that I've created. This

page is for absolute beginners, so they can start to get a grasp on what's

important, using terminology that is easily understood. It simply consists

of all four yogas that Advaita Vedanta considers valid (raja, jnana,

bhakta, karma), explained in a few words. Remember, it's a beginner's page.

Suggestions are welcome for this page. It can be accessed directly here:

With Thanks,
