Guest guest
Hello Everyone ! Swami Yogeshananda Hari OM! Jody, Here I am again, I can't get it off my mind. What can't I get off my mind ? The following posting from you is keeping me awake ! Tim, I appreciate your response to my question regarding Hinduism, but there are some very specific definitions within the Vedanta system as regards that question. I would prefer to read more factual material than opinions. I tend to disregard opinions. Jody ________ You know, Jody, this is the second time you have addressed me as 'Tim'. If you are missing Tim, why don't you drop him a line, asking him to come back to the list. JatilA is no good without KutilA....you know that ! Now to get back to the subject at hand: The word Hindu is not a native Indian word. This is a way for 'outside' people to describe collectively, the peoples of the subcontinent of India. 'Hindus' do not describe themselves as such. They are either Vaishnava, Shivaite, Jain, Sikh, Shakta...or, more generally speaking, followers of Sanatana Dharma [eternal law], Arya Samaj, etc. etc. etc. ad infinitum. It is only when confronted by 'outsiders', they use the 'generally accepted' term 'Hindu'. This is fact, dear Jody, not just my 'opinion' So, what is Hinduism ? Where do we draw the line ? In a few generations, the names 'Bombay' and 'Madras' will be all but forgotten, having been replaced, in the minds of people, with 'Mumbai' and 'Chennai'....the same will happen to the word 'HINDU'! The only difference being, there will be no word to replace it. The western world is taking years to grasp the fact, that within the sub-continent of India, there are more races, languages, dialects, religions etc. than any other comparable geographical area on the planet. We in the West, have always had the tendency to oversimplify, to group together in a 'manageable' package, these diverse elements. As folks become more knowledgeable, these misconceptions will vanish.
