LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Mother celebrates her 99th birthday Wednesday

still determined to live life to the full even dancing the twist to prove her

point.

The Queen Mother was reported to have left no doubts at grandson Prince Edward's

wedding to Sophie Rhys-Jones in June that she had fully recovered from a hip

operation last year.

``She was said to have thrown away her walking sticks and danced the twist at

the reception,'' the Daily Telegraph said in a front-page report.

Like most other British newspapers, it splashed a specially released picture of

the Queen Mother cradling her ninth great-grandchild, Arthur Chatto.

She is expected to enter her 100th year by making her now traditional birthday

appearance outside her Clarence House residence in London to receive cards,

flowers and other gifts from thousands of well-wishers.

The Corps of Drums of the 1st Battalion of the Welsh Guards will march past and

play ``Happy Birthday.''

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, as she is officially known, is likely to take

to her ``Queen Mum Mobile'' golf buggy for the occasion.

As old as the century, the nation's favorite grandmother has survived the

brickbats thrown at the monarchy, which has been dogged in recent years by

divorce, scandal and accusations that it is an anachronism.

Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth, has traditionally sent telegrams to her subjects

when they become centenarians. The Queen Mother looks set to reach that landmark

in the year 2000.

The feisty matriarch, who has lived longer than any other member of the royal

family, won the nation's undying affection when she refused to leave London

during Germany's World War Two bombing blitz.

Adolf Hitler called her the most dangerous woman in Europe because she was so

effective at boosting public morale.

The Queen Mother is a fervent horse racing fan and great believer in the

restorative powers of a stiff gin and tonic.
