All four vedas have upanishads. Since vedas have got different branches, theoretically, each branch should have at least one upanishad. Taking into consideration all the known branches of Vedas, we should have more than 1100 upanishads. Scholars, while searching for the complete collection of upanishads, came across two upanishads called " allOpanishad " and " SailOpanishad " . The " allOpanishad " is nothing but translation of a few bits of qur'an in to vedic sanskrit (date unknown). The " SailOpanishad " is nothing but the good translation of " sermon on the mount " . It is evident that sanskrit scholars who belong to those religions, in their innocent intention (my opinion) to attract the hindu people towards their religion, translated their sacred texts into vedic sanskrit and named them as Upanishads. Obviously, this has landed our scholars in confusion. The need arose to find the upanishads that are genuine. Fortunate to us, our Lord Sri Rama and Sri Hanuma came to the rescue of our religion... There is an upanishad called " mouktika upanishad " . It is Lord Rama's teaching to Hanuma. In this upanishad Rama quotes one sloka from each upanishad. There are total 108 quotations taken from 108 upanishads. Since Lord Rama lived long back, even before Prophet Christ and Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him), the quoted 108 upanishads are accepted as authentic by our scholars. Rama advised Hanuma to read all these 108 upanishads. He also stated that out of these 108, there are ten upanishads that are very important. They are: eeSakEna kaTha praSna munDa mAndookya taittiri aitarEyaMca chAMdOgyaM bRhadAraNyakaM daSa || (1) eeSAvASya (2) kEna (3) kaTha (4) prasna (5) munDama (6) mAnDookya (7) taittiriya (8) aiterEya (9) chAndOgya (10) bRhadAraNyaka All three great acharyas have written commentaries on these ten upanishads, in order to establish their school of thought. i.e. Sri AdiSankara (advaita: non-dual school), Sri Ramanuja (visiStaadvaita: qualified non-dual school), Sri Madhava (dvaita: dual school), Your questions/comments are most welcome.
