Guest guest
Dear friends, Please find below wonderful association and discussion between Sri Ramakrishna and his treating doctor. It will be completed in four parts. (DR. C. S. SHAH) -------------------- Sri Ramakrishna and Dr. Mahendra Lal Sarkar Part 1 Sri Ramakrishna came in contact with people from all walks of life, including many physicians of his time. These later included specialists of Ayurvedic, homeopathic, and modern branches of medicine. While others came to Sri Ramakrishna as aspirants seeking spiritual guidance, the physicians were privileged to have an opportunity of rendering professional service to him. And one Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, a renowned homeopath and physician, had the good fortune of remaining in contact with him for considerably long time. It is important to note that these talks, although addressed to a doctor, apply equally to all educated persons who hold scientific rational views. Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar In October 1885, the seriousness of the Sri Ramakrishna's illness became clear. He was shifted to Calcutta for the best possible medical care. Dr. Sarkar was chosen to treat Sri Ramakrishna. He was very honest and sincere person who loved truthfulness. He was the founder president of 'The Association for the cultivation of science' and was a rationalist with scientific outlook. He did not much believe in traditional religion, but held the view that God could be comprehended more clearly through the truths of the natural sciences. On seeing the devotion and sacrifice of the disciples, Dr. Sarkar treated Sri Ramakrishna free of charge. He used to make two or three visits per day. Sometimes the doctor remained spellbound for hours listening to Sri Ramakrishna on the subject of spirituality. He frequently observed Sri Ramakrishna in the state of samadhi and examined him medically with the stethoscope and other means. He was surprised to find that his heartbeat and other vital signs had completely disappeared during that state. Vision of Sri Ramakrishna about the Doctor In one of his visions the Mother showed Sri Ramakrishna that Dr. Sarkar would come to him; he will have much knowledge, but would be dry and worldly. Later, Sri Ramakrishna told the doctor he will not remain like that -a dry intellectual type, but will soften on account of spiritual consciousness. In this connection the following incidence is worth mentioning: " Dr. Sarkar arrived. At the sight of him Sri Ramakrishna went into samadhi. Soon, on listening to the song, the doctor himself became almost ecstatic. In the high spiritual mood, Sri Ramakrishna placed his foot on the lap of the doctor. He was pleased and his eyes were filled with tears. In this state Sri Ramakrishna said to the doctor, 'You are very pure; otherwise I could not have put my foot on your lap', and continued, 'He alone has peace who has tasted the Bliss of Rama. What is this world? What is there in it? What is there in money, wealth, honour, or creature comforts? O mind; know Rama! Whom else should you know.
