Guest guest
Dear friends, 'Selfishness of genes (our nature), if not checked by developing value system by undertaking conscious and deliberate spiritual disciplines, will lead to stagnation of the human evolution at the sensory level, create human and social psychic distortions, and eventually destroy the human race and life. Certain conditions are to be fulfilled to avoid this tragedy of derailing of the evolutionary process. The first condition is to understand that there is spiritual dimension to human nature. The evolution has now become psycho-spiritual rather than somatic. Man himself can now create organs and the means required to progress in this direction much faster than the nature can do: Man himself has become the Trustee of further evolutionary progress. The necessity is to recognize and accept uniqueness of our own nature in this regard. There is an urgent need to understand that scientific efforts should be directed to a future life in a supernatural world (internal nature) equally, or even more, as physical sciences are engaged in exploring the external nature. The mind is the organ of help for an individual in this pursuit of exploration of inner nature. Sadhana [spiritual disciplines] is the force necessary to achieve this end.' Guest guest
Dear Dr. S, You mail below led me to share a couple of thoughts to see what you think... I have often thought that really " selfishness " never totally goes away except when the consciousness of a separate self dissolves (and then only for the time it dissolves). (Just to clarify, here I am defining selfishness as a simple desire for happiness and our actions that attempt to obtain it, which may be different from what you meant below.) But I think that what gives a saint happiness is different than what gives a very worldly person happiness. I am thinking that it is that difference, not the basic motivation to find happiness that distinguishes one from the other, and then not in so black-and-white a fashion as we sometimes imagine! As we progress, we try different means to happiness and peace. The one that is most in our face -- worldly enjoyments, we try. That will not satisfy, so we try mental or emotional means. Perhaps that does not fully satisfy, so we reach for something beyond both emotion and reason, and find bliss. Finally, it rankles that we even perceive an 'other', so maybe that goes, too. That last sentence is speculative on my part. I do try to write from experience, so I must note when I am speculating! Also, I wonder if the above is itself part of the evolutionary process that is already happening? If we take that attitude, I believe we might be saved from the spiritual pride of feeling that we have somehow helped evolution by our efforts (a dilemma in itself.) What do you think? Also, could you give an example of what you mean by " selfishness of genes (our nature) " . Thanks!
