Once when I was there, he said to me, 'Why do you chew betel-leaf?' I said: 'It is my sweet pleasure. I shall chew betel-leaf, look at my face in the mirror, and dance naked among a thousand girls. Any time that I see something REALLY GOOD, i.e. your poem and Ramkali's " Oneness of the Human Family " , I receive an inner prompting to create a page and link it to the Ramakrishna page @ http://www.angelfire.com/ma/ramakrishna/ These things are beyond my control.... Don't you think that all would benefit from the stories on Lord Shiva, mentioned by Shankar? Guest guest
Now that is a spicy Ramakrishna story! Again, though I revere him as the divine incarnate, what makes me *love* him is his humor and human-ness. Here is an example of that humor for sure. I can almost picture him doing this like a mischievous child trying to shock everyone! :-) On this question, I have heard [forget where] that a new translation of the Gospel has been in the works. Apparently, when it was translated into English from the original Bengali, the translator felt that certain of the Master's 'spicier' phrases would not be understood or received kindly by the Western readers. Of course, this was the 1940's as well. So, to some extent, I heard, the Gospel was tailored to the sensibilities of that time and culture; not surprising. I don't remember well, but this may have come up at a discussion at the Boston Vedanta Center, informally over dinner one time. Anyway, I am curious if anyone knows anything about this and if it is still in the works, who is doing it, etc. Or did I mis-understand? The Gospel many times has made me smile, I have a feeling that the Master's antics if translated more closely would be a sight to behold!
