Guest guest
Dear Tipple, I want to add the following to my earlier posting on the subject. I differred with the opinion expressed in the former part of your posting but not to the statement by Swami Ranganadhananda ji. Sri Swamiji's reply reminds us the reply of Sri Ramakrishna to a similar question from Swami Vivekananda. To this question Sri Ramakrishna asked V to put his head near the water and Sri ramakrihna pressed it under the water and stated later that the same desperation V felt to bring the head out of the water must be felt to realise God.(I remember to have read it somewhere. I do not know it's authenticity.) Sri Ranganadhanandaji's reference, I think is to such a desperation. With Kind regards Ramana Sarma. Guest guest
Dear Ramana, No one could disagree with you, that we are more fortunate if He makes us think of Him even during armchair comfort! But, as Dr. Shah suggested, we seem to easily slip into complacency when things go well. Which is why we must practice remembrance every possible conscious moment. Do you not agree? Guest guest
Dear Ramana, Yes, I remember the story of holding Narendra's head under water, and I also agree that Swami Ranganathananda's remark suggested the same desperation. Which is the same thing Ramakrishna meant by teaching that we must cry with a YEARNING heart. Edith
Guest guest
Dear sadhakas, Why the word 'suffering' seems to hurt everyone as if most of us are afraid of it! Soft mattress, good food, security in job, regular earning, good education, all this is also in fact suffering! Poverty and want is 'iron chain' while the above mentioned is 'golden chain' if both tie down the soul to the mundane world and come in the way of realizing one's true nature! Prayer is an attempt to talk to our higher self, so as to gain courage and strength inherent in us, and become fit to realize for ourselves the true nature of the things as they are: transient and changing, against the unchanging permanent Reality. dr c s shah ======================== E-magazine on science and spirituality. Guest guest
Namaste Reminds me of Swamiji's point that 'Pain is indeed the greatest teacher'! Regards. Guest guest
Namaste Ramana The story you are referring to is one that was told by Sri Ramakrishna to his disciple (I don't know if it's Swamiji). But I am unaware of Sri Ramakrishna doing it to Swamiji. Do correct me.
