I believe Gnosticism is unrelated to this, gnosis being cognate with the Sanskrit jnana, Knowledge. The Gnostics were not at all atheists, but " Knowers " , and esoteric ones at that. Hence, a-gnostic, one who doesn't know. In Indian tradition there are at least 2 meaning for naastika (literally one adhering to non-existence): the one you mention and the ordinary meaning which we give to atheists anywhere, regardless of religious context.
