Dear Art,

The Sanskrit word is Naastika (long a), rather than naustika. I believe

Gnosticism is unrelated to this, gnosis being cognate with the Sanskrit

jnana, Knowledge. The Gnostics were not at all atheists, but " Knowers " , and

esoteric ones at that. Hence, a-gnostic, one who doesn't know.

In Indian tradition there are at least 2 meaning for naastika (literally

one adhering to non-existence): the one you mention and the ordinary

meaning which we give to atheists anywhere, regardless of religious context.

Yours, Swami Yogeshananda

Namaste,

This book is named " Dyana Yogam " . This is an abridged version with

source taken from two books. It is mainly taken from the book

THE ETERNAL COMPANION

Life and Teachings of Swami Brahmananda

Swami Yatiswarananda & Swami Prabhavananda
