Guest guest
Dear Friends, Why should I be moral? Why should I not rob others and be rich? What prevents me to enjoy this life at the cost of others? When we try to explain these predicaments from physical, mental, or intellectual unity point of view we are disappointed as every person is physically, mentally, and intellectually different. The unity is not found therein however hard we may try. We try to find unity in those departments where it it is not present. We deceive ourselves and become hypocrite. Whole charity and philanthropy comes to naught because of this misplaced focus. The dormant feeling of inequality lingers and comes to surface in the form of ethnic violence, racial strife, and concentration camps. But unity must be present somewhere; otherwise morality and ethics has no place in this world. This unity in diversity (and multiplicity) is found in the potential divinity of every soul. The divinity of man is the focus/locus of unity. The spiritual nature of myself and everyone else, knowingly or unknowingly, makes me love and serve others. The dignity of human being is based on the divinity within. When (and if) I see divinity in others, my love and care becomes service to God. Then every work becomes worship. Vedanta teaches us to realize - experience - this divinity in oneself first so as to become aware of the same in others. By undertaking spiritual practices - sadhana - one can realize this truth of Unity of Existence: Spiritual Solidarity of Universe. This is the aim and destiny of human birth. * Unity amongst diversity and multiplicity does not mean reducing everything to " sameness " . It is not a morose attempt to curb the talents and bring the fellow to lower grade of mediocrity. Nor it is an attempt to curb the richness in human endeavor, so as to bring parity at lower level, be it material prosperity, artistic richness, or scientific progress. dr c s shah -- ==================================== E-magazine on science and spirituality.
