Dear friends,

A Vivekananda Cultural Heritage of India Exhibition was inaugurated at the

`Ice House', a historical monument in Chennai (Madras), on Monday, Dec 20.

The building, earlier known as Castle Kernan, has been completely renovated

and renamed `Vivekanandar Illam' in memory of the great monk who stayed

there for six days during his visit to Madras in February 1897.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, hailed the Ramakrishna

Math as a ``Mount Everest among voluntary

organisations serving the people''. He said the State Cabinet

would take a decision on further extending the lease of Vivekanandar Illam

to the Mylapore Ramakrishna Math, to set up a permanent exhibition on Swami

Vivekananda and Indian cultural

heritage.

The first phase of the exhibition comprises a painting section (India from

Vedic times till the advent of Sri Ramakrishna) and a photo gallery. Swami

Smarananandaji Maharaj, General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math, recalled

how it was Madras which first recognised Swami Vivekananda's power and

potential when he landed there as a wandering monk, and how the city took a

leading part in sending him to the West.

May Thakur bless you. - Guha
