Guest guest
Dear Jay, You said in the last digest: " We prefer to stick to the teachings that were given not recently but a few thousand years ago. " Needless to say, I would have loved to hear your talk on this very interesting subject. We humans tend to have more faith in that which has 'stood the test of time'. Also, when a great religious teacher has left the body, he can say no more. If we are fortunate enough to have his or her words in print, and, if these words still ring true a century or more later, our confidence easily turns to firm committment. To quote Sri Swami Vivekananda, " The authority of the Vedas extends to all ages, climes, and persons; that is to say., their application is not confined to any particluar place, time, and persons. The Vedas are the only exponent of the Universal Religion. " And he also said: " Shri Bagavan Ramakrishna is the reformed and remodelled manifestation of all the past great epoch-makers in religion. " Again, " The dead never return; the past night does not reappear; a spent-up tidal wave does not rise anew; neither does a man inhabit the same body over again. So from the worship of the dead past, O man, we invite you to the worship of the living present; from the regretful brooding over bygones, we invite you to the activities of the present; from the waste of energy in retracing lost and demolished pathways, we call you to broad, new-laid highways lying very near. He that is wise, let him understand.
