I do not understand why death is necessary for the yogi to merge withhis supreme Self. Sri Krishna was one with his supreme Self while ina live body.

Shri Krishna was an avatar. The Avatar is born established in Divine Will; that Will being the Lord, who appears in every age as a rudder for the devout.

The yogi must live out the prarabdha karma of the body. There are three types. Sanchita, kriyamana, and prarabdha. Prarabdha is the past karma that is bearing fruit as the present body. kriyamana is the karma being created in the now, and sanchita is the sum total of all karma stored in the sushumna.

The yogi, through attainment, can forestall kriyamana karma, and can even burn sanchita karma, but the prarabdha karma that is to bear fruit in this body is to be burnt before the body is released. Karma is intricate beyond the scope of the brain. Vast and complex is it, and the current body is in a karmic dance with those forces of nature and others around it. So, even though one may be centered in the true nature, the body still plays its final dance in the cosmic dance. For one established in the Self, this is of no concern. Some yogis die upon enlightenment, some live in the body for a time, and some reside in the body for 50 more years.

One may be destined to die after falling from a plane. Halfway through the fall, he may reach self realization, but he still must complete the last half of the fall to hit the ground and die.

Complex and all encomassing is karma, one cannot pull out of the game of life at will. It is a delicate affair, and when karmic obligations are fulfilled, only then will the body be released.
