Guest guest
Take care of the mind --------------------- Many of us spend so much care to take care of the body. The mind too requires equal care, if not more. If the body is healthy, but mind is unhealthy, the person will not have peace to enjoy the health of the body. Many diseases of the body arise from a diseased mind. An unhealthy mind also affects the immunity system of the body and paves way for other diseases as well. If the body is unhealthy but the mind is healthy, the severity of the disease does not affect the person. The person can be cheerful and enjoy life in spite of a diseased body, if the mind is healthy. A healthy mind is a goal in itself. The definition of a mentally healthy person is given in the second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. It is popularly known as " Stitaprajna Lakshana " . You can refer to the definition at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/2973/011.html. You may also refer to a dicussion at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/2973/008.html. We all know that to develop a healthy body, the following are necessary: 1. Taking healthy food 2. Avoiding unhealthy food 3. Good exercise The same is applicable to develop a healthy mind also. 1. One should feed the mind with healthy inputs. This includes the company of holy men and others of similar temperament and reading scriptures and other good books. 2. One should avoid the company of people with dissimilar temperaments. One should avoid books, movies and TV programmes which are against the goal. One should not foster bad and negative thoughts. 3. Just as the body has various organs like hands, legs, the respiratory system, digestive system, etc., the mind to has various faculties like intellect and emotion. The intellect has to be exercised by science, mathematics, philosophy and the like. The emotion has to be exercised by worship, music, devotional songs, good literature and the like. All the while, one should remember the ultimate goal - to develop a healthy mind. Otherwise, it will become off the target like the effort of the old scholar to memorise grammar rules (which became the object of the great poem of Sri Sankara - Bhajagovindam).
