Chapter 3, Verse 3:

Swami Chetanananda

I am uncreated and separate from creation, for I am ever present. I am

unclouded and free from the cloud of maya, for I am always manifest. I

do not borrow light from another light, and I am also separate from the

luminous objects, for I am Self-luminous. I am

Existence-Knowledge-Bliss and boundless as space.

Notes: I am Existence-Knowledge-Bliss - The real nature of " I " , which

is the Atman, has been expressed in Vedanta philosophy as

Existence-Knowledge-Bliss Absolute. Like the chanting of a mantra,

Dattatreya repeats the following line forty times with a view to

aserting the real nature of the Self:

Jnanamritam samarasam gaganopamo'ham.

Jnana=knowledge; amritam=bliss; samrasaram=existence; gaganta=space;

upama=(boundless) as; aham=I (am)

Swami Ashokananda

I am devoid of root and rootlessness and am ever manifest. Iam devoid

of smoke and smokelessness and am ever manifest. I am devoid of light

and absence of light and am ever manifest. I am the nectar of

Knowledge, homogeneous Existence, like the sky.

Notes: Devoid, etc. - " Root " means cause. The Avadhuta is describing

the Self in Its absolute aspect as well as in Its aspect of

manifestation.

Smoke - the envelope of maya

Light - relative knowledge
