Song of the Ever free

(Avadhuta Gita)

Chapter 5 verse 6

Brahman is neither the jar-space nor the jar.

It is neither the body of the individual soul

nor the individual soul itself.

It is beyond the relationship of cause and effect.

Being the selfsame Brahman,

O mind, why do you weep?

Commentary:

One of the popular metaphors used to show relationship of

Atman with Brahman has been the idea of space within a jar.

The explanation goes:-

Just as the space in the jar and space outside are not truly

separate. It is the jar which brings about this 'artificial' separation;

in the same way the embodied Atman

'encased in the body (jar)' is not separate from Brahman.

This verse of the Avadhuta Gita moves away from this usage.

What it implies is that 'all metaphors'

(including the one about the space in the jar)

cannot truly put across what is involved.

i.e. this 'jar' being responsible or being the 'cause' of the

separation etc are not really good enough to explain what is going on.

Brahman is not bothered to get involved with such 'cause and effect links'.
