[ramakrishna] Weekend math fun

1. Pick the number of times a week (more than once but less than 10)that you would like to have chocolate (or sandesh, or whatever yourfavorite treat is). 2. Multiply this number by 2.3. Add 5.4. Multiply it by 50.5. If you have already had your birthday this year, add 1750. If you haven't, add 1749.6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born. You should now have a three-digit number. The first digit of this was your original number (how many times youwanted the treat each week). The second two digits are your age. This is the only year (2000) it will work.Any of you know HOW it works?Edith=======

Dear Edith

My reply is included in red to explain how this

system works for the year 2000. (and why you add

different numbers depending on if you have already had

your birhtdate this year) and how magically the

fist digit is your chosen 'treat no' and last two digits are your age.....jay

> 1. Pick the number of times a week (more than once but less than 10)> that you would like to have chocolate (or sandesh, or whatever your> favorite treat is).

Let us pick a number call it x (the trick is that it has to be less than 10 else

the magic cannot work as you have too many digits in the first part

of the answer)

> 2. Multiply this number by 2.

so we now get 2x

> 3. Add 5.

so now we get 2x + 5

> 4. Multiply it by 50.

so now we have 50(2x + 5) which equal 100x + 250

> 5. If you have already had your birthday this year, add 1750.

now we add 1750 (you see why 1750 so that it will add with 250

which you always have and get to the magic number 2000 (this year).

so you get 100x + 2000 ( for the case you have had your birthday)

> If you haven't, add 1749.

(we will ignore this part as it simply will give your age one year less as you are awaiting b'day)

> 6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

now as you subtract what ever was your birth year you will get your age.

ie. you end up with your birth year in the two digits (ie. less than 99 years)

do not forget we are still carrying that + 100x ..

> You should now have a three-digit number.

the reason why 100x does not get mixed up is with your age is that you

have 100 in front of it so it will only produce a number like

200 or 300 etc... the zero zero at the back will not interfere with the

age figure that has beocme available and is always (less than 99) be your age

and the 2 or 3 in front is your chosen number of treats (i.e. the x)

hope the explanation is easy to see.

Best to try it out with a different choice of x (number of treats and work

out by splitting as shown above)

good gymnastics for the weekend : ) jay> The first digit of this was your original number (how many times you> wanted the treat each week).> The second two digits are your age.> > This is the only year (2000) it will work.> Any of you know HOW it works?> Edith>
