Guest guest
When i was living in India i would go and recite Vishnu Saharanamam every Sunday in a group. IT is true that one feels greater devotion chanting with a group, at least i felt so at the time. I wish i could have kept on with that... Does any one know who composed the Lalitha S and the Shiva S...? I think the Vishnu S was by Bhishma, while on his bed of arrows, was it not? i may be wrong. It is nice to have these Sahasranamams ...and i have always wondered why it is that only Hinduism has these 1000 names....it kind of gives one a calming effect reciting them. Atleast that is what Ramana Maharishi says! WHen one vibrates a tuning fork another tuning fork of the same frequency will also start vibrating automatically...i learnt that was due to resonance. If you vibrate the " A " string of a guitar another guitar's " A " string will automatically start vibrating. in the same way these chants set up vibrations that resonate to the eternal witin... pranaams jairam >Namaste , > It is told that the lalitha sahasra nama are most powerful than the rest >of of >two , may be because it contains more powerful root mantras & its >derivatives . >Don't forget to forget to pronounce properly . Guest guest
Dear All, It was nice to know that Jairam Seshadri is remembering the full throated reciting of Sahasranama, by the New Delhi SATSANG way back in 70s. I was also a part of that group. It was rally satisfying to get to gether and just recite and finally take theprasadam given so devotedly which was prepared by the lady of the house. I forgot to mention that this Satsang meet every Sunday 8am and at the dot Hari OM starts. No gossiping no talking!!!. We just offer flowers to the picture of Ranganatha which is taken to the house where the recital is arranged by rotation . This Satsang is functioning without interruption for the last 40 years . Great is it not ? Even the best Tv programme did not come in the way of the recital !! Ofcourse some of us used to get such programmes recorded !! Wish you all a very happy Deepavali.. Guest guest
it is nice to know that there is a father and son team on this list! One keeping the other honest....one supposes....and it is so nice to know that there are fathers out there who fully support their son's spiritual quest...rarer than one thinks! and mention of the Thousand names of VIshnu, Shiva and the DIvine Mother makes me wonder why other religions have not done the same.... The Thousand Names of Lord Jesus...or perhaps 1008 Names of Lord Jesus... Prayer reciting these names reflecting on the glories of GOD are always a welcome respite at my age i am unable to get online as much as i would like. i do apologize if i seem so slow in my reaction to some of the messages. i did appreciate the Arrow Prayers and the reference to Swami Brahmananda...i do thank you all for being such a solace WHen the Beatles released the song " GIve Peace a Chance " the VIetnam War was still raging, we had just come out of the Korean War and there was general disillusionment in the US...that song was on my lips ...i was in my 40s at the time and even now it is one of my favourite songs... despite that after reading the message changing the words from " give peace a chance " to " Ramakrishna " now when i find myself humming the song...i find myself automatically saying " Ramakrishna " instead of " give peace a chance " which all must add to Peace ...surely thank you.... Guest guest
Thank you Maria for the wonderful comments about father and son team. When I read about jairam's arrow prayers I was reminded of my very young days using the very same technique to remember various details reqd. to answer qns in exams!! There are many ways of remembering The Ultimate. Personally as Jairam puts it Group reciting has many advantages. It is because it is really tough to meditate without wandering when one is all by himself. Guest guest
Yes it is rare and rarer still are fathers who do so wholeheartedly! i can say with all honesty that whatever little good there is in me it is due to my parents...whatever bad is due to my own faults. It is funny that there is mention of the 1000 names of Jesus... i am in the process of compiling that ...even this very moment and have got together so far ...around a little over 400 names..perhaps if the list allows me to share the names i have collected so far i can also seek help in ensuring that i am not repeating some names....? if no one objects i shall start emailing 40 names a message, in a couple of days...that way in 25 messages we can get the 1000 names of Jesus...i shall ofcourse wait to see if there are any objections before i start. if there is i will not. i realise that this is a RAMAKRISHNA listserv but i hope none of you mind if i aired the Names of Jesus ,...a Jesus Sahasranam ...who was as much an Avatar as Ramakrishna... When Ramana Maharishi was summoned by the Madras High Court for some court case that the Maharishi was asked to testify, the Madras High Court asked him to testify who he was... The Maharishi replied: " Just like Jadabharata, Sukadeva, Rishabha, I am also another one... " when i read this i was more than amazed, for the luminaries he mentioned were such recognized Sages! and Ramana Maharishi recognized himself as being no no less...and He was not! I also recall Swami Chinmayananda whose retreats i have had the honour of attending, so many times, before his untimely passing away, talking of how when he bought land for the ashram in Sidhabaari up near the Himalayas, fierce winds would constantly rage making it impossible for any construction work to begin. Finally the Swami himself came to experience the gale like winds and after a meditative pause he said... " Before beginning construction let us build a statue of Hanumman! Let Him face the wind. Let us leave Hanumaan to appease His father the Wind God!..... And the Wind really did stop its fierceness and construction of the ashram soon began and was completed! Whenever i recall that incident i always smile inwardly! regards jairam >it is nice to know that there is a father and son team on this list! Guest guest
when i read my own message i seem to have said that The Maharishi was not as great as the other sages...i did not mean that at all. i meant quite the opposite my mistake i meant to say... Guest guest
Dear Friends , It is nice to know that quite a few are interestedin the thousand names.Surely this is one of the ways of reaching HIM and remembering Him. There are many places now in India particularly South where Vishnu Sahasranamam is chanted loud and clear by groups in perfect harmony and beautifully sunchronised. Chanting in such groups and listening to such chanting is really wonderful. My congrats to the great effort that is now on to compile 1000 names of Jesus. God bless you all.
