Guest guest
Here is my understanding of the subject: As with all things, motive is the key. If one uses drugs to get high - like drinking alcohol to get drunk - then that probably isn't such a great idea overall. I have found that many people who use drugs as a way to " expand their consciousness " ultimately are looking for a reason to be able to get high. As far as I know the use of pot by very advanced individuals in some Hindu paths is used not really as an " expander " of consciousness but is used like a weight lifter uses weights: If the individual can still be in a mindful state while intoxicated by drugs or alcohol then that is a test of how well they have truly overcome their " hidden " tendencies. In that case the karma would be different then someone who was just getting high. And here is a big but: We commonly lie to ourselves about our motives. We have conscious and subconscious motives. A person who used drugs (with the guidance of a proper teacher) as a " testing " ground would have no problem if they ever touched the stuff again. It would emotionally and psychologically mean nothing to them. I also used the term " advanced " because only and advanced person on the spiritual path can do many things that might seem crazy or negative to us but be perfectly fine for them because of their motives/attitude/direct wisdom perception.
