Dear

I have only come across mention of 'Soma' in the Hindu

scriptures. It appears that this drug was not cultivated for a long period

and its use has disappeared. It is said that this drug induced

some kind of 'altered state of consciousness'.

Raja yoga the system of meditation by Sage Patanjali also

mentions use of drugs for 'altering state of consciousness'.

My own understanding of this subject is that during successful

meditation the body (mainly the brain) undergoes some chemical processes

which accompany this higher state of awareness.

Drugs may induce similar chemical changes in the brain which

'gives a sample of what true meditation produces'.

This would be a dynamic experience that would

result in strongly addictive tendencies.

The idea behind meditation is the control the mind in order to

achieve higher state of consciousness. This kind of uncontrolled

' sample experiences ' may prove self destructive.

jay
