Happy New Year. May the New Year bring with it goodwill, understanding and

devotion in our lives.

Your mail. I appreciate your views. Thakur did not want us to condemn

anyone or look down upon anyone. Rationality has its foremost place, no

doubt. But faith comes from tangible experiences. Mind can go only to a

certain extent. For persons with education etc. rationality is no doubt

necessary. But there is the other category of people who are, if I can say,

emotive ones. For them there is a definite need for tangible results in

order to bring in faith within. As far as we are concerned we cannot

condemn.

Coming to Baba, I feel that he has done immense good to humanity in very

many ways. He has attracted millions of people towards our culture and

traditions. He has given hope to millions for living a good life and it is

no easy task. He might use magic to bring about faith in him but the

outcome of his work is for the greater good.

Some in the garb of performing miracles, bring weakness in the minds of

people and use innocents for their personal ends. But there are some (a

handful only) who use their knowledge or tricks for the greater good. We

sometimes scoff at those miracle-mongers. But the same is true of

rationalists also. They do harm to others by taking away the only source of

happiness in emotional people, viz. the expression of their faith in various

physical ways. Both are wrong.

Swamiji wanted us to become strong and rationalise; but he also gave equal

importance to development of bhakti and emotion-culture. He was bhakta

within and jnani without, isn't it? In later years Swamiji went on

pilgrimages and even performed the austeries and the traditional forms of

penances just to show that he came to revive and not to destroy. You

remember the incident when Miss.MacLeod commented in the houseboat in

Kashmir when she saw the three marks on the forehead of Alasinga Perumal and

pitied him. Swamiji roared and said 'hands off - if you can do something for

my people do it; do not pity or show contempt (the wordings may not be

correct, but the meaning is). Hence not tolerance but acceptance is the core

of Thakur's teachings.

Sorry for taking your precious time.

Inspired by your work online, some of our volunteers have taken upon

themselves the task of encouraging youngsters in Singapore to go to your

website and learn the lessons. We intend to have lessons on our page and

evaluate the children's performances. To this end, one of our very

resourceful volunteers Miss.Prema may contact you or if you find some time

send her a mail at:spd

Yours in Sri Ramakrishna,
